Mammoth mission to rescue a dog trapped in an underground pipe

A dog named Martha fled his home entering a tunnel in Yorkshire woods, Pudsey, England on the afternoon of Friday 17 March.

Concerned, owner Susan O’Reilly Millicent asked for help in a Facebook group and was the local drainage company Dr Drainage who pledged to save Martha.

An incredible rescue operation

The team rushed to the scene to help with some of their specialist equipment. The rescue mission involved Heat it’s a excavator to save the black Bull Terrier stuck twenty meters inside the Leeds culvert.

Yorkshire Water and West Yorkshire Fire Services had been called to the scene but more help was needed.

After about 18 hours, Martha was found thanks to the thermal imaging camera and was able to extract from the tube on Sunday morning.

“At times we felt defeated, but we weren’t going to let that stop us from completing the rescue mission,” the operators write. Dr Drainage are Facebook.

Grateful owners

Susan and her husband Paul lived for hours in anxiety not knowing if their dog could be pulled safely out of that canal and they didn’t believe their eyes as soon as the two operators managed to find little Martha.

Replying in a comment to the Facebook post by Dr DrainageSusan said:

“We cannot find the words to express how grateful and appreciative we are for the help you have so readily given and the determination you have shown, even when hope was fading. You didn’t give up on Martha, we’ll be forever grateful.”

And he concludes:

“Martha is understandably exhausted from her ordeal but is now safe and sound and sleeping in her kennel thanks to all of you. Paul and Susan.”
