everything you need to know

Contact a dog breeding and to a serious breederare two very important aspects when thinking about buying purebred dogs. A self-respecting dog breeding, in fact, follows precise rules, which allow purebred dogs to grow healthy and strong. In the same way there is a difference between a serious breeder and one who treats his dogs as mere merchandise.

Who has never adopted a purebred dog and is new to the world of cynology, often doesn’t give much weight to this kind of (sometimes quite obvious) “details”. In fact, it takes very little to understand if a dog kennel can be considered of quality or if it is better to stay away from it. Quality always makes the difference.

How to become a dog breeder?

There are two types of farming: professional e amateur. Pursuant to add 23/08/1993 n.349professional dog breeding provides for the presence of at least five mares at least they give birth 30 puppies per year.

Being a professional breeder doesn’t always mean being more qualified than an amateur one. If the love for dogs is the same and you only want the best for them, there will be no difference between one and the other. Both will also be able to obtain the Affix of theENCI (Italian National Dog Entity) and the FCI (International Cynological Federation).

Are dog breeders agricultural entrepreneurs?

The breeder by profession is therefore an agricultural entrepreneur and has the obligation to register to the Chamber of Commerce of its territory.

Among other things, the professional breeder will have to exhibit the health authorization and will have to issue tax documents (such as invoices). If the revenues obtained from breeding exceed the expenses, this is considered a professional activity.

L’amateur dog breeding is not subject to tax obligations, as it is a private individual who sells a purebred dog to other private individuals. These puppies must still be registered in the National Canine Registry and be equipped with pedigree and microchip. The mares and the number of puppies per year can also be lower than that envisaged for professional farms.

If an amateur breeder earns more income than expenses for his breeding, he will still have to declare the earnings as “occasional business“.

What is the ENCI affix for farms?

A farm certified by ENCIrequires the granting of a Affixthe form of which can be downloaded directly on website of the association. A breeder can apply for this Affix, only if he has some specific elements:

  • Be the owner of at least two mares of the same breed;
  • Have sired at least two litters of the aforementioned mares and have registered the puppies in the Italian herd book;
  • Have signed the code of ethics for dog breeders;
  • Be resident in Italy;
  • Have not been convicted of any kind of animal crime (and have no pending proceedings) relating to the business of breeding or trading dogs.

How to choose a good dog kennel?

A self-respecting dog farm must be managed by a good farmer. This will always put his dogs first, not treating them as goods on which to profit, but as i own children. Furthermore, a good kennel will not have cages, but adequate spaces where the dogs can run around and grow in freedom.

If it is a herd of Golden Retriever or a breeding of Labradors (or any medium or large breed of dog), the spaces will have to be wider.

Another aspect to consider is that of cleaning. Always pay attention to the hygienic-sanitary conditions of the farm. Frequently changed food bowls and those with clear water are already a clear symbol of cleanliness.

A professional breeder will also ask a thousand questions to the prospective buyer, to be sure that your puppy will be welcomed into the most suitable family for him.

Finally, in a good dog house, a breeder will never care more than three races different or talk about “puppies ready for delivery“. It is always better to choose who breeds one or two racesbecause to be truly competent, the breeder will have to know every aspect of the breed of dogs he breeds.
