Farewell to Maurizio Costanzo, the journalist great friend of animals

Rome, February 24, 2023. He has left us Maurice Costanzo at the age of 85.

Today, in the early afternoon, the funeral will take place at the Chiesa degli Artisti in Piazza del Popolo in Rome, which will be broadcast live on Rai 1 from 3 pm and on Canale 5 from 2 pm.

A great lover of all animals

In addition to being one of the most renowned Italian journalists and television presenters, Maurizio Costanzo was a great animal lover.

Many knew his great passion for turtles, synonymous with good luck: he had an entire collection, of which he was very jealous, made up of thousands of pieces.

Costanzo has often told of his immense love for animals of all kinds, with a particular bond with the dogs and, more recently, with his own cat Philip.

On the other hand, the Villa Sadula bought together with Maria in Ansedonia, in Tuscany, takes its name from the initials of their four-legged friends: a German Shepherd, an Italian Bracco and a Dachshund.

In his book I prefer dogs (and a cat) he wrote:

«Animals are superior to us in many respects, such as the ability to express affection, to demonstrate fidelity, to be sincere and to bully the other only for what is strictly necessary for survival. Man doesn’t, man prevails for fun, out of boredom, out of insecurity, out of empty ambition. Observing the animal world was a life lesson for me».

The relationship with dogs

Since he was a child, Maurizio has lived surrounded by dogs, with whom he established a deep bond. His great love for dogs, a passion he shared with Maria De Filippi, prompted him to adopt Ugo, Philippa e Giovanniall Wire-haired Dachshunds, who have become real members of the family.

For example, he had also dedicated a column to animals, Animals Like Us with the interventions of the biologist and member of the scientific committee of WWF Francesco Petretti.

The recent discovery of the love of cats

In recent years, however, he had approached the world of felines, thanks to the meeting with Filippo, a Chartreux cat who was part of an abandoned litter.

He soon became her inseparable friend, becoming a point of reference in her days:

«It would be easier for me to think of seeing my office without an employee than without Filippo», says Costanzo in a video interview for the TV program On the side of the animals.

More generally, with regard to felines, the journalist believed that: «Cats mind their own business, just a few fuss. I go to the office every day and stop by to say hello. Then sometimes he comes to look at my studio and often in the evening, he sleeps in my armchair. Cats are extraordinary in their dignity and I think they are reserved in their feelings».

Goodbye to a great man.
