A dog ramp makes certain heights accessible without difficulty and without outside help. These devices are very practical for dogs that have difficulty jumping, such as older, disabled or small dogs.
A dog ramp in front of the sofa allows your Chihuahua to take a nap in peace. The same goes for transport in the car: if your Labrador suffers from hip problems, you no longer have to carry him in the trunk every time you go out, with the risk of damaging your back.

Dog ramps are useful for dogs who have difficulty jumping or climbing stairs. These are mainly:
- puppies;
- Small breeds or short-legged dogs such as Dachshunds;
- Dogs with arthritis or dysplasia;
- Old or sick dogs;
- Dogs with disabilities, walking difficulties or with a cart.
Dog ramps allow these animals to walk again in the woods.
For some specimens with back problems (herniated disc), jumping is strongly contraindicated. A dog ramp can be a good alternative if you are unable to stop your pet from jumping.

You can find dog ramps in specialty stores or on the internet. Before buying one, be sure to check all the features of the device. They must be suitable for the intended use and for the size of the dog. Some have weight limits, while others are more suitable for indoor use.
How to teach the dog to use the ramp?
Never force your dog to use the ramp, as this could scare, injure and make him stop wanting to use it.
It’s probably better start with a low slope: put your dog on the ramp or guide him with his collar. Reassure him with your voice and entice him with a treat treat. When he has traveled the full distance of the ramp, reward and praise him warmly.
Gradually increase the difficulty, but be sure your pet will soon understand the value of this tool. Learning to go down can be more difficult than going up. Follow your dog’s pace without rushing him.
How safe are dog ramps?
A safe ramp should include:
- A material strong enough to support the dog’s weight;
- A non-slip surface;
- Non-slip feet;
- Edges on the sides to prevent slipping (especially for longer ones).
Dog ramps should also be used in good condition. As already mentioned, your dog must be gradually trained to use them so that he doesn’t get scared.
When used in the car, it is always best to secure the dog’s entry and exit by standing next to him and guiding him gently with one hand on the collar. Beware of exuberant dogs who can jump out and get hurt.
