Rubble, debris, mud and desolation characterize Casamicciola in these last days. Devastated by the landslide of Mount Epomeo this Saturday 26 November, the municipality of Ischia is experiencing difficult days full of anguish.

Civil Protection operators and volunteers dig non-stop. But they are not alone. Alongside them, there are the four-legged heroes.

The importance of rescue dogs

I dogs of the canine units of National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS) have come from Basilicata and Veneto with the mission of being able to identify the missing people.

These are three German Shepherds, accompanied by their respective conductors, specialized in the search for survivors of catastrophic events such as landslides, avalanches and earthquakes.

These special animals are used to moving in rugged territories such as those of Casamicciola e their contribution is invaluable for the discovery of the missing.

The heroes with their wags and exceptional nose are conquering the inhabitants of the island of Ischia: among them they stand out Kyraa 7-year-old German Shepherd from Veneto and accompanied by his handler Loris Maoret.

“A dog unit of the Veneto Alpine Rescue is also operating in Ischia, made up of handler Loris Maoret and the dog Kira”, writes the President of Veneto, Luca Zaia, on Facebook.

And he adds:

“The entire Civil Protection community of the country is at work to help those who, in the space of a few moments, have seen their lives turned upside down”.

Unfortunately, hopes of finding survivors fade with each passing hour. Currently the number of victims of the landslide has risen to 10 while the search continues for two other missing persons.

Even in these cases dogs are confirmed as man’s best friend as well as fundamental allies for natural and non-natural disasters.
