Electoral seat in Rome and Milan with the dog: two situations compared

Sunday 25th September 2022 the Italians were called to vote i new members of the House and Senate.

And pet owners wondered if they had the right to take their dog to the polling station or not.

The answer is yes, dogs at the polling station are allowed. Or rather, the Ministry of the Interior does not prohibit going to the polling booth with your dog on a leash, but the final decision rests with the seat president.

Reason why taking the dog to the polling station can create conflicts and disagreements.

The opposite cases of Rome and Milan

Today we want to focus on two events that took place in a completely different way in Rome and Milan, during this election weekend.

Sara e Joy, Roma

Joy, a Toy Poodle, is a well-known pet-influencer in Italy. The human of him, he told on Facebook – as if it were little Joy speaking – how their electoral voting weekend took place in the capital.

“Mami, me and Happy this morning [un amico cagnolino, ndr] we went to vote. Everyone gave us a lot of pampering and told us that we were very good and beautiful. We had a lot of pampering and we felt so proud ».

And keeps going:

«It was wonderful to see that dogs can now enter the polls without problems when it comes to voting. Indeed, they are even filled with pampering ».

This is the pleasant adventure of Sara’s faithful and inseparable four-legged companion, who had no problem getting into the voting booth, on the contrary, he was welcomed with great enthusiasm.

Sara Turetta and Amelie, Milan

Distinctly different situation for Sarah Turettafounder and President of the international animal rights association Save The Dogs and other Animalswho exposed what happened to her and her beloved Chihuahua Amelie through a Twitter post.

Contrary to Sara and Joy, the Turetta did not have access to the seat with his dog who had to stay out.

All this took place in Milan, a city defined as dog-friendlyor animal lover.

In order not to avoid conflicts, the protector of the animals sadly accepted the decision of the President of the seat in which she had gone, which, as seen above, has the right to establish whether or not dogs can enter.

Why is it so important to be able to take the dog to the polls?

In some cases, owners have no choice but to take their faithful companion with them, such as when:

This is why the problem arises. If, as in these cases, there is no possibility to leave your dog at home, preventing Fido de facto accessing the voting booth the right to vote is prevented.
