Andalusian Podenco: focus on the breed

The Andalusian Podenco is one of the best known dog breeds in Spain. It is a specimen that has always been used for hunting, even if its history goes far beyond this area.

This breed is similar to other Iberian breeds such as the Portuguese Podenco, the Iberian Podenco, and the Canarian Podenco.

In Andalusia, a region on the southern coast of Spain, it is one of the breeds that suffers the most from abandonment. Like most hunting dogs, when they are no longer useful for this purpose or for breeding, hunters get rid of them ruthlessly.

It is a breed with a sensitive character that can sometimes suffer from problems related to fear, precisely because of the experiences lived as a hunting specimen.

Dog story

The physical aspect speaks of its history: a body from southern Spain, but with some elements of Egyptian origin. Just one of the theories on its origin, in fact, wants the breed to descend from Egyptian races that arrived on the Peninsula more than 3,000 years ago.

In turn, this Podenco has a close genetic relationship with the rest of European hunting dogs. Despite its centuries-old history, it has been included in the Royal Canine Society of Spain only in 1992.

This specimen can be raised without problems in apartments or houses that are not very comfortable. Given the medium size and non-destructive nature, there are no problems staying at home. However, it will be necessary to let him out several times a day to allow him to release energy.

At home, you can work on strengthening the bond with him through stimulation and intelligence exercises such as games of fetch, which are ideal for this breed.

Adoption of the Andalusian Podenco: for whom?

The Andalusian is a dog that needs activity. In other words, if you like to play sports or you know you can offer the time and physical exercise your pet needs, this dog can be right for you and adapt perfectly to your life rhythms.

Once his sport session (such as agility) is done, he will relax at home and keep you company in peace between one nap and another.

This is the beauty of his character: as much as he is energetic and needs to be active in everyday life, once energy is released, he will be a great house dog capable of snuggling up on the sofa with you to enjoy a pleasant stay-at-home evening.
