The State Police announced the death of Yoghian 11-year-old German Shepherd who specializes in mountain rescue.
This very prepared and courageous avalanche doga member of the mountain search and rescue canine units serving in the Moena detachment (Trentino), has saved many lives during his “career”.
10 years in service
At 13 months Yogi started training and after six months he was entrusted to his handler Christian. Two years later the big dog got the job in avalanche research.
Yoghi he intervened for 10 years in the mountains, identifying and rescuing dozens and dozens of people overwhelmed by avalanches or in difficulty.
“A special bond was immediately established between Christian and Yoghi: a look or a word is enough and they understand each other immediately”, reads the description of a video about them posted on the Facebook page of the State Police.
The four-legged friend immediately became a member of Christian’s family, confirming the symbiotic relationship that is created between dog and handler.

A particular bond was immediately established between Christian and Yoghi: a look or a word is enough and they understand each other immediately. They work together in research activities dispersed on the surface with excellent results and now both have also obtained the operating patent on helicopters. The police dog left a hole in the heart of his handler and his life partner as well as his “colleagues” and all who knew him.
The memory of the State Police
It was with great sorrow that the State Police broke the news of Yogi’s death on January 22:
«Ten years of happiness for Yoghi, the German Shepherd of search and rescue in an avalanche, together with Christian, his handler» followed by the story of their first aid together.
“Christian will never forget him again and Yogi will always be in his heart. Happy Yogi Rainbow Bridge,” concludes Officer Lisa of the State Police.
