Wedge razbora – the basic principles of breeding

The razbora, so known today, first appeared in European aquariums only in 1906. It was also in fashion quite quickly in Poland. The lack of special requirements meant that this species of fish quickly gained recognition and became the basis for many aquarists. In nature, razorfish live in herds, and one of their most characteristic features is great mobility. The wedge-shaped razbora loves forest streams, darkened rivers and peat bogs, as well as … reservoirs in homes. In nature it is found in Thailand and Sumatra, however, it is popular in aquariums around the world. Do you want to join the group of breeders? Check what responsibilities you have to face. The wedge-shaped razbora is one of the most popular aquarium fish, so you can find everything you need in your pet stores. Preparing the aquarium will not cause you much trouble, but you need to know what you need.

Primarily:

  • aquarium (walls at least 100 cm long; capacity is at least 54 liters);
  • oak leaves and alder cones (additions referring to the natural habitat of razbora);
  • floating plants that diffuse light;
  • dark gravel.

What water temperature will be the best for a wedge-shaped cutter? The ideal parameters are 22-25 ° C, although the water should be slightly warmer during the breeding season. If you give your fish access to soft, acidic and dark water, you will provide them with the best conditions.

Wedge razbora and its diet

The wedge-shaped razbora is not very demanding when it comes to food. In nature, the basis of the fish diet is invertebrates, insects and their larvae. If you want to feed your razor well under farming conditions, make it alive and dry. At the same time, remember that not only the chosen food is important, but also the method of feeding. The wedge-shaped razbora does not reach for food from the bottom of the tank, so you need to feed it more often and in smaller amounts.

Wedge razbora and its breeding

Breeding these fish shouldn’t be too much of a problem for you, as long as you learn its most important rules in time. What do you need to know?

Wedge razbora during and after pregnancy

The reproduction of the wedge-shaped plant is quite complicated. Do you want to enlarge the herd? Prepare a special aquarium in an appropriate manner, intended only for breeding. The basis is good shading and equipment.

  1. Opt for broad-leaved vegetation as the razbora will spawn on its underside.
  2. Fish will also be helped in breeding by the appropriate water temperature (from 26 to 28 degrees Celsius).
  3. Also, take care of the favorable pH of the water, which should be between 5.0 and 6.0 during the reproduction period.
  4. Diet also plays an important role in preparing these fish for breeding. Give them high-quality live food just before spawning. The portions served at this time should be larger than before.

Wedge razbora – reproduction

What happens after spawning? Adult spearfish often eat their eggs, after spawning you have to catch them quickly and transfer them to another tank. The sooner you spot the eggs, the greater the chance of a large brood. Small fish start to hatch from the saved eggs within 24-48 hours, and after a few days they can easily swim.

Wedge razbora – the diseases to which it is exposed

A responsible breeder must take care of the health of his pets and, above all, protect them against the most common diseases. Skin lesions and a sunken abdomen are frequent symptoms in razorberries.

If you take care of the health of the wedge-shaped plant, you can enjoy its company even for 5 years. Remember to protect your fish from excessive light and feed them properly. These are the basic rules that make it easier to keep the whole herd in good shape.

Wedge razbora – the price of a fish

The wedge-shaped razbora is a popular fish among aquarists, so its price is not too high. In pet stores, the cost of one fish does not exceed PLN 7. However, pay attention to who you are buying the razor from. Choose proven kennels where the animals are provided with the best possible conditions and professional care from the first minutes of their lives.

Not only the wedge-shaped cutlery – what kind of fish can you combine it with in the aquarium?

The fish in question is quite social, so it is worth making sure that it is not alone in the aquarium. The best solution is a razbor herd, consisting of at least 10 individuals. However, such a busy shoal requires space. You have to provide it to your pupils at the very beginning of breeding.

Although the best for razbora is the company of fish of the same species, but you can also choose other fish. In aquariums they are often placed in the company of:

  • fighter;
  • shrimp;
  • small fish (e.g. Ramirez’s cichlids).

Breeding of the wedge-shaped razor is simple, so even novice aquarium enthusiasts will cope with this task. Remember, however, that even such a hardy fish needs a responsible guardian who will provide it with the right conditions. Control the temperature in the aquarium and provide it with live and dry food, and you will surely meet its basic requirements.
