The wavy parrot – characteristics

The natural habitat and homeland of wavy parrots is Australia, or rather the central part of the continent. The species was discovered relatively recently, only at the beginning of the 19th century. Currently, these parrots are found all over the world, but in Europe they only live in private farms or in parrot houses.

What does a wavy parrot look like?

The wavy parrot is a small bird whose body length is about 20 cm. The animal weighs about 25-30 g. The parakeets owe their name to the characteristic waves. A pattern in this shape covers their head and wings. This parrot has short legs and a strong beak. Each paw ends with four fingers with sharp claws.

In nature, the budgerigar is green, but in breeding you can meet multi-colored varieties. Most often it will be blue, but there are also birds that are yellow and in the colors of the rainbow.

The wavy parrot – male and female

How to tell what gender is a wavy parrot? The male has a dark blue wax, while the females have a blue or beige color.

Wavy parrot breeding requirements, i.e. a cage and more

A parakeet cage does not have to be very large, but it should be spacious enough for the bird (or a pair) to fly freely in it. Which one to choose?

  1. It should be at least 70-80 cm long.
  2. The best is a corrugated parrot cage, barred, with bars that should not be placed more than 1-1.2 cm in relation to each other.
  3. Remember to have poles in the cage of the parrot to sit on, as well as ladders or swings to play with.
  4. Cover the bottom of the cage with blank paper and replace it regularly.

Where to put a cage for a corrugated parrot?

Do not put the parrot cage in the bathroom, toilet or kitchen. Choose a living room or a living room, as budgerigars are sociable and don’t like to be left on their own. When looking for a suitable place, keep in mind that the cage should not be in the immediate vicinity:

Large fluctuations in temperature are detrimental to these lovely birds.

What to remember before releasing the Wavy Parrot?

Remember to release Budgerigars regularly. However, before you open the birdcage wide for the first time, let them be at least pre-tame. The windows should remain closed. Why? Wavy parrots can fly at high speeds, so if your pet escapes, they probably won’t come back to you.

How to tame a budgerigar?

Taming a parrot is a relatively easy task that does not require too much experience and knowledge. By nature, it is a bird that trusts humans. However, remember not to tame your pet by force. Gradually accustom the parrot to your person, talk to him and give food in an open hand. It should be a matter of time before it starts to sit on your arms and shoulders.

Common diseases of wavy parrots

Budgerigars, like other ornamental birds, can suffer from various diseases. Unusual changes in your pet’s behavior may indicate that it has health problems. Male wavy parrots often develop beak disease in the form of an overgrowth of wax, which grows larger, loses its shape and turns brown. Usually the disease clears up on its own, but if it does not go away you should go to the vet. Other medical conditions include:

  • scabies (attacks the pet’s beak);
  • viral diseases (including papillomatosis, which most often affects the cloaca and the beak cavity. There are warts there, from which blood may ooze);
  • gastroenteritis, which may be caused, for example, by an inappropriate diet of the bird or a lack of hygiene.

At the first symptoms related to the animal’s defecation or feathers, do not hesitate and go to the veterinarian.

How many wavy parrots live?

The wavy parrot usually lives around 10 years in home conditions. However, a lot depends on the health of the pet and proper care for it. Some parakeets can live up to 5 years more or less than this age. So you see how much your posture can affect a bird’s lifespan.

What do wavy parrots eat?

How to properly feed wavy parrots? It’s best to provide them with a well-balanced diet. Ready mixes of grains will be the best, in which there are:

Budgerigars are also very eager to eat oilseeds, but you shouldn’t give too much of them. From time to time, include fresh grass, greens, and even small pieces of vegetables and fruit in their diet for variety.

How much does a wavy parrot cost?

The popularity of this colorful bird is also influenced by its cost. So how much do you have to pay for a budgerigar? The price for one is only PLN 20-30. A pair is an expense of PLN 40-50. As you can see, these are not exorbitant amounts and virtually anyone who wants to can afford such a pet.

For whom is a wavy parrot a good choice?

Remember that budgies can live up to 15 years. Do you decide, for example, to have a pair of juveniles? You have to reckon with the fact that you take many years of responsibility for your winged friends. The wavy parrot needs human interaction and is a gregarious animal, so it is worth providing it with a bird companion. If you can, buy at least two wavy parrots home to keep the birds from getting bored.

The Wavy Parrot is not for everyone

If you are not home often, it is better not to keep such a pet at home. Lack of time to tame a bird and play with it is a sign that this is not the kind of animal you are looking for. The lonely wavy parrot will become depressed, so it is better not to take a pet than to expose it to boredom and mental discomfort.

The budgerigar found its way from Australia to England, where it is still one of the most willingly kept ornamental birds. The friendly disposition and reasonable price of these birds are the main sources of their popularity. Taming your pet shouldn’t be a challenge either. Ideally, you should buy a home park of birds, as in the wild, budgies live in flocks. The couple will feel much better with you.
