“they used birds to capture them”

A criminal gang has been arrested in China for baiting felines with sparrows in order to sell them for their meat. 150 cats were rescued during the intervention and are now recovering from their emotions in shelter before being able to find their owners.

The heinous facts took place in the city of womenin the province of Shandong in Chine. Men used a species of sparrows protected in the region to attract and then capture domestic cats.

Live birds were placed in cages as bait. When the feline had entered, the offenders operated the trap door to imprison them, reports Provence.

“We’ve been tracking this gang of cat kidnappers and traders for a while and finally found the place where they were storing all the toms they were stealing from the streets”explained a policeman.

The 150 cats were kept in 7 cramped, rusty cages waiting to be slaughtered for their meat. “It was appalling to see the state they were in. Many of them were emaciated and crying. Our discovery of dozens of living sparrows was also a big shock”said M.Huang from the Association Humane Society International.

2 babies were born after the rescue and will be raised in a shelter before being offered for adoption.

Fortunately, 2 pet tomcats stolen from their owners have already returned home. The others, meanwhile, receive care.

“We don’t know how long these poor kitties have been locked up without food or water in China’s extremely hot climate, but if it hadn’t been for the police, they would have continued to suffer being driven to miles to be killed in markets and slaughterhouses”Mr. Huang lamented.

For now, the Chinese remain big devotees of cat and dog meat, although there has been a steady decline. Some provinces, such as Guangdong or even Guangxihowever, have banned their consumption since 2020.

In addition, the country has no law regarding animal protection. Offenders will therefore be judged only for having captured protected birds and for stealing pets.
