Rome, launched an interesting project for dogs and cats in shelters

Pets can be a real therapy for lonely, depressed, sick or elderly people.

And why not do even more good by adopting animals from kennels and catteries, in need of a home?

This is the interesting one project initiated by the Municipality of Rome on an experimental basis, announced by Oipa.

Dogs and cats in senior centers

In a memorandum of Giunta approved at the beginning of March the Campidoglio announces its intention to encourage “the adoption of dogs and cats from municipal kennels and catteries by guests of elderly centers who have a lot of attention, time and care to donate”.

The document also reads:

«The adoption of an elderly dog ​​by an elderly person it would improve the quality of life of bothespecially from an emotional and relational point of view.

The beneficial effects of animals such as dogs, cats but also horses and other farm animals on people have been known for some time now, so much so that certain specimens are used for Pet-Therapy intended for needy subjects (such as children or the elderly).

What does OIP think?

The International Organization for the Protection of Animals welcomes the new Roman project, with a double benefit: both for the elderly and for the animals themselves.

“We appreciate this project by the Councilor for the Environment, Sabrina Alfonsi, and by the Councilor for Social Policies, Barbara Funari, and we hope that the animals will be entrusted with all the guarantees and safety of the case, avoiding frivolity”, specifies the president of the ‘Oipa, Massimo Comparotto.

«The residential structures of Roma Capitale can be the new home of the most unfortunate dogs and cats, which can bring joy and motivation to guests. In this way a synergy would be activated which would raise the quality of life of both parties».
