Lora the Great – What You Need to Know Before Buying a Parrot?

The Latin name for this species is “eclectus roratus” and its customary name is “common red dye”. These animals come from around Oceania, specifically from the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. Birds can also be found on the northeastern coast of Australia. The Great Lora prefers a warm climate, which does not mean that it cannot be grown in Poland. If the bird has the right conditions, it will be successful in our climate and will not suffer here. It has a good character and is not too burdensome, so it is suitable for the first pet. Check if the Lora parrot is the right pet for your home. Read on!

Lora – a parrot with a unique appearance

Some parrot species differ so little that special genetic testing is required to determine their sex. The Great Lora, however, is not the case, as males and females differ so much that they were once considered separate species. Females have a red color of feathers with an admixture of blue on the top of the breast. Their beaks are black. Males, on the other hand, have bright green feathers on most of their bodies, and the tips of the wings and tail are reddish-blue (with a touch of yellow). Their beaks are light orange (dark brown in young). Males are also slightly larger than females.

Lora parrot – the nature and behavior of the bird

These birds are relatively quiet, although they do speak from time to time. However, they are not talkative parrots and it will be rather difficult to get them to learn words, although it depends on the individual predispositions of a given individual. Lory’s aren’t very destructive, so any toys you buy for them will usually last a long time. In addition, the great lora is a very intelligent bird, who likes to play and, above all, values contact with its owner. It is a good companion for the whole family also because it does not require too much.

Great Lora – breeding and conditions that the bird needs

The best place for these parrots will definitely be the aviary. It will provide the necessary space to fly and keep the lora from becoming depressed. The great lora, however, can also be kept in a cage, as long as it is large enough. Then you also need to remember to release your pet regularly so that it can fly around the house and interact with the household members. It is also a good idea to buy two birds, as many species of parrots enjoy the company of their species.

Lora the great and her diet

The bird we are writing about has a high demand for vitamin A, which must be administered in the form of appropriate food or special supplements. It is best to feed Lora with soft, fresh food, i.e. fruits and vegetables. Give her, for example:

  • carrots;
  • beetroot;
  • broccoli;
  • apples;
  • mango;
  • oranges;
  • grenades.

Fresh food should be changed regularly so that it does not spoil. Lora the great should also get a ready-made feed mix available at pet stores. It can also be supplemented with boiled rice, noodles, peas and grains, which, however, are only served as special treats.

Lora great – the price of one individual

These birds are not very popular species, so their prices, unfortunately, are not low. The minimum amount to be prepared for is PLN 2,000, although there are also individuals for which you have to pay over PLN 3,000. Low prices should raise doubts as they may indicate an unreliable source of origin. Sometimes this means that the birds are illegally smuggled or have not been kept in the proper conditions.
