Is it possible to vote with the dog? Here’s what you need to know

Sunday 25th September the Italians will be asked to vote for the new ones members of the House and the Senate. But the question that buzzes in all pet owners’ heads is: you can go to vote with the dog or will I have to leave Fido at home?

This question has tried to answer theBAD (International Animal Protection Organization) who explained how it works.

You can go to vote with the dog … or maybe not!

As usual, everything remains in the “maybe”: if on the one hand, for the Ministry of the Interior nothing prohibits to go to the polling booth with the dog on a leash, on the other side there final decision rests with the chairman of the polling station.

“We keep in mind that there may be particular reasons, hopefully true, for which the chairman of the polling station can prohibit access to Fido – explains the lawyer Claudia Taccani of the Oipa, – for example, the presence at the polling station phobic people or who may have allergic reactions to the presence of dogs. In cases like these it is necessary to balance interests and guarantee the right to vote, always respecting the animal whose protection, let us remember, entered the Constitution this year ».

It seems logical, however, that no ban can be given to guide dogs for the blind.

How to vote with the dog?

When you go to the polling station together with your pet, you clearly have to keep it on a leash next to uswithout letting him wander around and putting the muzzle, if requested. Furthermore, we must always carry this with us in case it is useful.

“It is useful to inquire at the entrance of the building that houses the urns: usually the police forces present can provide us with instructions and, in case of doubt, we cordially explain that there is already a positive indication from the Ministry of the Interior” , continues the lawyer Taccani.

“In case of denied access, never leave our dog unattended outside school: could be stressed or frightened. Finally, we remind you that we could be responsible in case of damage caused by our dog even if at that moment it is not with us, and above all we always keep in mind that the danger of theft of unattended animals is always looming ».

Now that all the basic information is clear we no longer have any excuse not to go to vote: everyone in the polling stations!
