In the Department of Correction of the PennsylvaniaIn the United States, there is a special program that allows inmates to participate in the socialization and education of shelter dogs.

It is a program that certainly makes a difference in the prison context and can change life of a man forever.

Dogs as cell mates

For inmates who participate in this program, the goal is to grow and train a dog in their cell so that he can then join the family who will adopt him, bringing with him a precious baggage of security and trust in the man.

It is not hard to believe that between the prisoner and the dog of the shelter ends up creating a close bond and deep.

For animals there are many advantages of the program: going to live in prison, the dog leaves his place in the shelter to other animals in need of being welcomed into the structure.

Another fundamental fact: being entrusted to the prisoners, many of the dogs thus avoid being suppressed.

In return, those men will emerge more empowered and emotionally enriched.

Painful separations

Of course, breakups are often difficult. When the time comes to let the dogs go to their new families, next to the happiness of knowing that your faithful four-legged companion awaits a life of love and pampering, there is the burning pain of detachment.

In the moving video below, an inmate bids farewell to his Speedy who he has trained for many weeks and with whom he has built a wonderful relationship.
