He sees a run-down dog, but soon discovers it is another poor animal

Although at first glance this animal that barely walks down the street might be mistaken for a dog, it is actually a black bear. This species inhabits the mountainous and wooded areas of North America.

Since the end of summer 2022, the media of the Virginia northerners have increasingly reported reports of bears suffering from scabiesalso known as mange.

Sick bears

According to the US newspaper wtop.com, 10 cases of bears affected by this pathology were reported in 2018. This year they have already been communicated almost 100 of this type.

“It’s just the bears that people notice. We are confident that there are still many sick specimens in the forest that no one has ever seen, ”said Katie Martin, a biologist with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

Fighting the disease is very complicated because it is difficult to isolate sick individuals from healthy ones. The authorities are calling for the removal of bird feeders, around which bears often congregate.

Although there are no large-scale action plans, the situation in Virginia is being closely monitored.

‘We are conducting a research project that will begin this spring to examine the movements of bears with scabies. We want to know how and where these specimens move, ”adds Katie Martin.

Fortunately, many manage to survive despite this disease. It is still unclear whether this is due to the genetics or diet of these bears.

Mange in pets

Scabies is one contagious parasitic disease pets, both dogs and cats, are also subject to. Humans can also be contaminated.
