Frida, the Labrador dog hero of Mexico (Video tribute) dies

We can’t remember the last time a dog’s death made international news. But this four-legged was special in the hearts of all Mexicans and above all of those who experienced firsthand the earthquake of September 2017.

Fridathe Labrador Retriever of the Navy, he left us at the age of 13 in the afternoon of Tuesday 15 November 2022.

The death occurred at the facilities of the Navy, in the Canine Control Subgroup, which has been her home in recent years, since she retired.

A life in service

Frida collaborated on multiple saves along with his human and canine colleagues at the Mexican Navy Secretariat.

The dog was born on April 12, 2009, in the premises of the Nucleo Cinofilo del Semar. She started her training at a very young age and she always stood outaccording to the Navy, “for concentration, balanced temperament, intrepidity, curiosity, adaptability, great willingness to play, ease of learning, empathy towards people and sociability”.

Throughout his heroic career, saved 12 lives and helped recover more than 40 bodies in accidents Of every kind. And not just in Mexico.

But it was in the earthquake of September 19, 2017, when the little dog, with her iconic shoes – which are now in the Footwear Museum in Mexico -, her visor and her Semar vest, had become more than a rescuer, she was a symbol of hope in the midst of tragedy.

What did Frida die of?

From what is known so far, the death was due to conditions typical of his age. A few months it had been reported that Frida was already in poor health.

On Tuesday evening, the Secretary of the Navy announced on his account Twitter that Frida was dead. Here are his words:

«Dear Frida, even if your passing hurts us, today the Navale Family promises to honor your memory, acting according to the legacy you taught us: nobility, loyalty and love. Thank you for serving Mexico, you will always live in our hearts.”

Frida had already retired since 2019, after nine years of precious aid to humans. It’s a statue had recently been inaugurated in his honor, “not only to motivate our men and women of the sea to act daily, but because he has given hope to thousands of Mexican families in the most difficult moments”, as he said Rafael Ojeda DuranSecretary of the Navy.
