As the group began the descent, the female Akbash – a Turkish canine breed closely related to the Anatolian Shepherd – collapsed and refused to take another step. The hikers tried to carry it, but it was too heavy for them. Their encouragement was equally unsuccessful.

They ended up calling for help. It is a specialized mountain rescue unit, the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Teamwhich intervened.

Cuts to the legs, fatigue and overweight prevented the dog from continuing to walk

According to its members, Maggie suffered from cuts on his legs, most likely from the ascent. This, combined with the overweight, the heat and the fatigue, made the descent extremely difficult for the dog.

The rescuers put her on a stretcher and took turns carrying her. The walk lasted 5 long hours. The dog could finally regain her strength, after being treated.
