Dog moult in spring: how does it work?

With the month of March the warm season has arrived and with the increase in temperatures also comes the period of moult of dogs. Spring or seasonal, this is the name of the natural process whereby dogs and cats can lose a lot of hair when the warm days arrive.

Let’s find out together when it starts, how long it lasts and how it works.

Shedding of dogs based on breed: what does the undercoat have to do with it?

There are different types of coat in dogs, so not all of our 4-legged friends change the coat likewise. In general, animals with an abundant, thick undercoat will shed in large numbers.

This is the case for example with Nordic dogs, such as the Husky or the Alaskan Malamute. Likewise some breeds will lose their tufts homogeneouslywhile others, like the Shar Pei, may lose their hair in patches (or strands) in some parts of the body.

When do dogs molt?

In general, most dogs shed twice a year: once in the spring to shed their thick winter coat, and once again in the fall to grow a thicker coat for the colder months.

How long does the dog moult last?

On average, it lasts 3 to 4 weeksbut the exact duration varies according to the type of dog breed.

What affects hair loss?

Another factor that can affect the moult of dogs (more properly defined ecdisi), as well as the duration of the latter, is lo lifestyle of the four legs.

Dogs that live a long time indoors they can lose a great deal of it all year round.

Is it abnormal if the dog’s hair does not moult only 2 times a year?

This phenomenon, called “false move”is due to frequent changes in temperature (between a heated interior and a colder exterior, for example) and brightness, consequences of our pace of life.

If your dog loses its hair all year round, even if the animal does not lead this lifestyle, and this problem is not related to its breed, you may need to see a doctor.
