Choosing an indoor crate for your dog could really change your life. If you have a destructive dog, you can lock him in his comfortable box for the few hours you are away (for shopping, work, etc.).

This is installed outside the home, in the garden, and allows your pet to enjoy the fresh air in complete safety. Naturally, the interior of these accessories must be beautifully decorated.

Try comfortable cushions and baskets, dog bowls (which can be attached to the run) or fans specifically designed for this space.

Would you like to keep your dog away under certain circumstances, but still give him the most comfortable home possible? Then take a look at the selection of dog cage accessories that we have prepared for you. You’ll find the perfect items to transform your dog house into a real royal palace!

What is the difference between a dog crate and a kennel?

Even though the dog crate and dog house appear to have the same use, there are some differences between these two dog shelters.

A cage is smaller than a doghouse, is usually made of metal, and allows the animal to turn around, lie down, and sit. There’s enough space for Fido to feel comfortable, but he can’t run around in it. It’s up to you to open or close the cage depending on the circumstances.

It is a unique shelter for the animal: under no circumstances should a crate be a dog’s home.

The pet bed offers more space. A kennel is usually a permanent building outside the house or apartment, set up in a garden to give Fido a space of her own.

More often than not, it’s a shed surrounded by a wire mesh fence. In contrast, kennels consist only of a large shed, with walls and a roof to protect the animal from rain, wind and extreme temperatures.

How to use a dog crate or kennel correctly?

Dog cages and kennels allow the animal to have a place of its own where it can feel at ease. People usually keep their dogs in their shelter under certain circumstances, such as when guests come to the house, to prevent them from jumping on them.

This shelter can also be very useful if the garden fence is not high enough and the dog has a runaway temperament.

If you don’t want your pet to sleep indoors, set up a comfortable kennel outside with his toys and favorite pillow.

Does your dog have a problem being alone at home? Get him used to going to his cage when you are there too. This way, you can get him used to this place made especially for him.

Warning, the cage should not be a place of punishment. Don’t lock your dog inside when he’s done something wrong! If he associates this place with the feeling of being punished, he will never feel comfortable there.

What types of accessories are needed for a dog crate or dog house?

If the outdoor cage is located in a windy area, it is recommended that you purchase one wind cover. This type of accessory attaches to the top and keeps Fido well protected from drafts.

You can also choose a comfortable cushion or basket. Your dog will be spending hours in his shelter, so it should be as comfortable as possible.

Don’t have air conditioning at home? Good news for your pet: there are cage fans! Just attach them to the grill and your dog will be pleasantly cool.

You can find all these dog accessories in pet stores or online on specialized sites.

What should I pay attention to when buying a dog cage accessory?

When buying a crate or kennel for your dog, you should pay attention to the size. Of course, if you have a Chihuahua, you won’t need as large a shelter as a German Shepherd’s.

Also check the finishes: there should be no sharp edges that could injure the animal. Make sure the frame is easy to clean, made of materials that won’t fade, and that they’re resistant to scratches and bites.

Also, make sure the locking system is effective. The dog must not be able to open the door by itself.

How long can a dog stay in its crate or kennel?

You can leave your dog in his shelter for a few hours. Veterinarians and breeders generally suggest not leaving the animal in the crate for more than five hours at a time for puppies, eight hours for adults.

If Fido is kept in his crate for too long, he can develop behavioral and physical problems. Without exercise, your dog can become overweight. Also, a dog who is bored all day can become depressed.

Since the kennel offers more space and is set up as a real living space, you can leave your dog in the kennel for longer.
