Dog bath after flea treatment: is it possible?

You are wondering if it is possible bathe the dog after the flea? We have the answer!

The veterinarian Paula Rodriguez explains if and how you can take a bath after putting the pesticide product. But first let’s take a look at pesticides for external use.

The importance of an anti-flea vial

The external pesticides they are essential for dog care and it is part of our responsibility as owners to keep our four-legged friends healthy and well-groomed.

The use of antiparasitic pipettes helps a lot to protect the animal from external parasites such as fleaslice, ticks and sandflies, some even protect it from mosquitoes as well.

Having said that, let’s find out if and how to wash the dog after applying the pesticide.

How long to wait to bathe the dog after flea treatment?

If you have applied the antiparasitic pipette to your Fido and would like to give him a purifying and relaxing bath, here’s when it would be better to wash your pet and when it is appropriate to postpone it!

Do the washing before the pesticide

If you have thought about bathing your dog before applying the antiparasitic pipette, we advise you to do not do it.

Pipettes need a layer of fat to distribute and, many times, bathing removes or minimizes the lipid film on the skin. Also, if the pipette is applied with a wet body surface, too absorption will be decreased as the water droplets will prevent the product from getting inside.

To ensure the effectiveness of the pipette, it is recommended to avoid bathing before applying the pesticide.

If bathing is necessary for any situation, such as when your faithful friend has decided to dive into puddles, apply the pipette between 24 and 48 hours after bathing to allow the fat layer to regenerate.

Bathe your dog after flea treatment

If the pet is washed immediately after applying the insecticide, it can be counterproductive. Pipettes have a “greasy” texture so you tend to want to wash your pet after applying the pesticide.

But it’s only a matter of time as the product will gradually be absorbed and that lump of “fat” will disappear.

If, on the other hand, we bathe our dog too early, the effectiveness of the pipette will suffer as part of it will be eliminated in the water.

Il leaflet of each product will indicate how much time we have to let pass from the application of the pipette to the bath of our dog, guaranteeing the action of the active ingredients.

What is the external pesticide in the form of a pipette?

This simple and easy to install product format is available from a wide variety of brands.

It settles in several places along the spinetrying to get our dog can’t get to lick this area (for this reason it is recommended to deposit the greatest amount between the two shoulder blades).

From this moment on, the product interacts with the fatty layer of the skin of our animal and absorption takes place. The contents of the pipette spread throughout the body and offer protection against parasites in the dog.

Do you know the pest control collar? Here it is explained Who!

The protection usually lasts a month, although it can vary depending on the product: ask your vet for advice on the most suitable treatment for your dog.

Other forms of external deworming

While the pipette is the most common form of external deworming, it is not the only one. Here are some options that don’t directly affect dog bathing:

  • Tablets: they are ingested orally and directly attack external parasites as their components are absorbed from the intestine and distributed through the skin through the blood. This form of dewormer allows you to take a bath before and after, as it does not interact with the good result of the product. The protection also usually lasts 1 month.
  • Shampoo: the method of application of the solution is ideal if the dog is very dirty and infested with fleas and ticks. In addition to cleaning, it attacks parasites. This shampoo is not entirely effective since it usually only acts on adult parasites (not eggs), but it gives us space to put the pipette after 48 hours.
  • Spray: the antiparasitic spray is administered locally on the entire surface of our animal. This can be a good tool at specific times or as extra protection on summer nights, for example, from mosquitoes.
  • Collar: another form of protection are antiparasitic collars, they are a good preventive and have a longer protection time, between 3 and 6 months. It is also recommended to remove them when bathing, although many commercial brands claim that they are waterproof and their effect is unaffected by water.

To conclude and answer the question whether it is possible to bathe the dog after the anti-flea, in order for the efficacy to be complete, it is not advisable to wash him either before or after the administration of the pipette without respecting the times set by each product.

Also note that the prevention to eliminate parasites from the beginning it should be our best ally and the fight against ticks and lice must therefore be carried out regularly.
