Cat owners living in Walldorf, Germany are relieved. They can finally let their feline friends go out without risking tens of thousands of euros in fines, as has been the case since May. A forced stay at home which had been decided in order to preserve an endangered species of bird.











It’s the end of purgatory for the cats of Walldorfa German city located in the north of Bade-Wurtemberg. They can now walk outside freely, while a strong penalty threatened their owners in the event of wandering, reported Euronews Tuesday, August 16.

The lifting of this containment measure took place on Monday, August 15, i.e. 2 weeks before the date initially set by the authorities.

The latter had set it up last May in order to protect an endangered bird species. This is the Crested Lark (Galerida cristata). The cat being one of the predators of this animal, it had been decided to prevent their masters from letting them out (unless they were kept on a leash) during this period of the year corresponding to that when the bird reproduces.

A stressful situation for cats

During the past 3 months, any cat owner in Walldorf whose animal was caught outside without a leash incurred a fine of 500 euros. In the event of injury or death of a crested lark caused by the feline, the bill became even more salty for its master: 50,000 euros.

These provisions, which will be renewed each year until 2025, have aroused much criticism among animal protection associations.
