A Shih Tzu becomes an assistance and comfort dog for patients in a psychiatric care unit





Pets have been shown to contribute to the well-being of their owners and provide support naturally. Assistance dogs can meet a multitude of needs, both for physical and psychological help. Minnie, her nickname, has just joined a care unit in a psychiatric hospital.










Lisa Whittle is an occupational health and well-being assistant. She works on a daily basis with patients and caregivers of The Harbouran inpatient mental health unit located in Blackpool in England.

This clinic, run by the Lancashire and the South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trustdemonstrates innovation in the care offered.

In effect, Lisa trained his Shih Tzu named Minnie so that it brings comfort to individuals who do not have their own doggie by their side. “She is the most amazing dog I know. I also have Minnie’s mother. From the moment she was born I knew she had something special and would make the perfect therapy dog.”said his mistress to the Mirror.

Intensive training

Lisa et Minnie went through a long training process before the latter officially took office. “We worked together so she could pass her pet therapy assessment. And she passed it with flying colors.has explained Lisa.

On May 18, 2022, the young Shih Tzu took up her post at the clinic. She roams the corridors of the care unit and consoles all those who need it, patients and caregivers alike.

Thus, every Wednesday, she helps patients to overcome their depression, promotes dialogue and encourages participation in activities. Minnie also shares his joy of living and his enthusiasm.

“Animals have been found to provide a sense of friendliness and normalcy to people in hospital and Minnie is already having a fantastic impact”concluded his extremely proud mistress.
