135 cats and 165 dogs emigrated from Puerto Rico to the United States to allow them to escape euthanasia

Puerto Rico is currently experiencing an unprecedented stray animal crisis. About 500,000 dogs living on the streets have been counted. Shelters are therefore overwhelmed and must resolve to euthanize between 94 and 96% of their residents. To fight against this, associations are mobilizing.

On Saturday August 27, 2022, 300 pets were transported on “flights of freedom” of Puerto Rico towards the United States. Associations The Sato Project et Wings of Rescue have joined forces with Tito’s Handmade Vodka to save 165 dogs and 135 cats from the streets of the island in order to give them a new home.

“We are thrilled to be the main link in this impressive one-day rescue effort to save 300 lives and bring joy to countless families.”said Ric Browdepresident of Wings of Rescueat Yahoo!entertainment.

The 135 tomcats and 165 doggies on two different planes landed in White Plains, New York, and Portland, Maine.

“With peak hurricane season fast approaching, my team and I are determined to get as many of these animals off the island as possible while it is still safe to fly.”has explained Chrissy Becklesfounder and president of the project Sato.

A large-scale rescue for a new beginning

This project was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the 2 nations. Puerto Rico is overrun with stray animals and cannot cope, while the United States have more resources and more potential adopters.

Last Saturday, 60 dogs already had families waiting for them at the airport. The others, meanwhile, will be dispatched to various local shelters where they will be offered for adoption.

“We are very grateful to our transport partner Wings of Rescue, the hosts who play the game as well as our donors. This massive undertaking would not be possible without a lot of hard work and collaboration. Together we are giving 300 deserving animals a second chance at life”a conclu Chrissy Beckles.
